Embark on a unique 4-day primate-focused safari to Gombe Stream National Park, one of Tanzania's most remote and biologically rich destinations. This exclusive journey takes you from Dar es Salaam to the shores of Lake Tanganyika, where you'll immerse yourself in the world of wild chimpanzees made famous by Dr. Jane Goodall's groundbreaking research.
Experience intimate chimpanzee trekking adventures, explore lush tropical forests, and enjoy the pristine beauty of Lake Tanganyika. This specialized safari offers unparalleled opportunities to observe chimpanzees in their natural habitat, along with other primates, diverse birdlife, and the stunning landscapes of western Tanzania.
Your adventure begins early in the morning with a domestic flight from Dar es Salaam to Kigoma (approx. 1,250 km, flight time about 2 hours). Upon arrival at Kigoma Airport, you will be warmly welcomed by your driver-guide. From the airport, you'll be transferred to the Kigoma port (approx. 10 km, about 20 minutes drive), where you will board a boat for your journey to Gombe Stream National Park. The boat ride from Kigoma to Gombe takes approximately 1.5 to 2 hours (depending on weather and boat type), covering a distance of about 16–20 km across the scenic waters of Lake Tanganyika, the second deepest lake in the world. Along the way, enjoy views of the lush shoreline, passing small fishing villages and possibly spotting birdlife or even hippos in the lake. Upon arrival at Gombe National Park, check into your lodge nestled within the park. After check-in, enjoy a leisurely dinner and take time to relax, soaking in the tranquility of the forest and lake surroundings. Overnight stay at your lodge in Gombe.
After breakfast, embark on a full day of exploration in Gombe Stream National Park. This park is most famous for its chimpanzee population and was the site of Dr. Jane Goodall's groundbreaking primate research. With the guidance of a professional park ranger, you will hike through the forest in search of wild chimpanzees. Trekking can take 2 to 5 hours, depending on the location of the chimpanzee families, and the terrain ranges from flat to moderately hilly. As you walk through the park, you'll also encounter other wildlife, such as olive baboons, red colobus monkeys, and a variety of forest birds and butterflies. The flora is equally rich, with dense forests, waterfalls, and tall fig trees creating a unique tropical environment. Enjoy a packed picnic lunch or return to the lodge depending on the time of your trek. Spend the afternoon relaxing by the lake or enjoying optional activities like swimming or a light nature walk. Return to your lodge for dinner and an overnight stay within the park.
Today is another opportunity to immerse yourself in the wonders of Gombe. After breakfast, you'll go on a second guided chimpanzee trek, exploring different parts of the forest. This gives you a greater chance to observe these fascinating creatures in their natural environment, possibly seeing different families or behaviors. After your trek, you may choose to visit the Jane Goodall Research Center, where you can learn more about the history of the chimpanzee study and conservation efforts in the area. In the afternoon, hike to Kakombe Waterfall or Mkenke Waterfall, both beautiful spots within the park where you can appreciate the untouched natural beauty. Alternatively, enjoy some downtime along the lakeshore — swim in the crystal-clear waters of Lake Tanganyika or watch local fishermen as they go about their daily routines. Dinner and overnight at your lodge in Gombe.
After an early breakfast, you will check out of your lodge and take a boat transfer back to Kigoma town (approx. 1.5–2 hours boat ride). Upon arrival at Kigoma port, you will be met and transferred to Kigoma Airport (approx. 20 minutes drive) to catch your return flight to Dar es Salaam (approx. 2 hours flight time). Your journey ends as you arrive back in Dar es Salaam, filled with incredible memories of your unique wildlife experience in one of Tanzania's most remote and beautiful national parks.
