Kilimanjaro Lemosho Route

Day 0: Arrival at Kilimanjaro Airport (JRO) - Moshi

Upon your arrival at Kilimanjaro Airport JRO you will meet with me followed by an hour drive to the hotel in Moshi Town for an orientation on your trek. You will spend the remaining day at the Hotel or hang around Moshi town. I will provide you with all the details on your trek and will also check your trekking gears. If you have missed one, I will help you on how to rent those missing gears from the rental shops.

Day 1: Moshi to Lemosho Gate to Mti Mkubwa Camp (Big Tree Camp)

Elevation: 2,100m to 2,700m
Driving Distance: 94km/58 miles (3 hours)
Walking Distance: 7km / 4.3mi
Walking Time: 3 to 4 Hrs
Habitat: Montane Forest
Highlights: You will be picked up at your hotel at around 08:00 am and transferred to the Lemosho gate located on the western side of Kilimanjaro which takes about 3 hours. After the registration process, you will still start our climb steadily through the forests of the Lemosho glades to reach Big Tree camp where you will be spending the night.

Mti Mkubwa Camp

Day 2: Mti Mkubwa Camp to Shira 2 Camp

Elevation: 2,700m to 3,850m
Walking Distance: 7.5km / 4.6mi
Walking Time: 4 to 5 Hrs
Habitat: Moorland / Heather
Highlights: After an early morning breakfast, you will begin your ascent out of the rainforest and into the heather moorland zone. You will cross many streams and walk over a plateau that leads to Shira 2 Camp (3840m). At this campsite, you will be next to a stream and have a spectacular view of the Western Breach and its glaciers in the East. Be prepared for a cold night as temperatures drop below freezing at this exposed camp.

Shira 2 Camp

Day 3: Shira Camp 2 to Barranco Camp

Elevation: 3,850m to 4,600m (Lava Tower) to 3,960m (Barranco Camp)
Walking Distance: 10 km / 6.2mi
Walking Time: 6-7 Hours
Habitat: Semi Desert
Highlights: Your trek starts with an ascent with far-reaching panoramic views, walking into the climatic zone of the upland desert and on the lava ridges beneath the glaciers of the Western Breach. You will reach the distinct pinnacle of the Lava Tower (4600 m), our high point for the day and a great place to enjoy your lunch. In the afternoon we make a steep descent to our camp for the night, located at the base of the Great Barranco Valley (3960 m). This is the best day for great acclimatization.

Day 4: Barranco Camp to Barafu Camp

Elevation: 3,900m to 4,700m
Distance: 9km/6mi
Hiking Time: 6-8 hours
Habitat: Alpine Desert
Highlights: Today is a day full of breathtaking views. In the morning you will ascend the Barranco Wall before trekking across rock and ridges to the Karanga Valley. Here you will be met with breathtaking views of the Western Breach and southern glacier. From there, having completed the Southern Circuit and seen every angle of the summit, you will continue to your next campsite, the Barafu Camp. The word "barafu" in Swahili means "ice" and this camp is located on a rocky, exposed ridge. Your guide will brief you in detail on how to prepare for summit night. Get to sleep by 18:00!

Day 5: Summit Day! Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak (5,895m) to Mweka Camp

Elevation: 4,600m to 5,895m down to 3,090m
Distance: 5km/3mi up / 13km/8mi down
Hiking Time: 5-7 hours up / 5-6 hours down
Habitat: Ice-capped, Stone scree, Heather and moorland
Highlights: You're starting your day early today – just after midnight! Your climbing team will wake you with a cup of hot tea and a light snack for energy as you get dressed and prepare your daypack for the adventure ahead. You'll be hiking in utter darkness for the next 5-7 hours, so take it slow and you'll arrive at Stella Point a few hours before dawn. From here, there are another two hours of intense hiking before you reach your ultimate goal: Uhuru Peak. Standing at 5,895m, you'll be able to experience a spectacular sunrise and take in the panoramic view. You've done it! After snapping your photos and soaking it all in, you'll begin the descent back down towards Barafu Camp, where you'll stop for lunch and some celebration. After a bit of rest, you'll continue down to Mweka Camp to overnight.

Day 6: Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate to Moshi

Elevation: 3,090m to 1,680m
Distance: 10km/6mi
Hiking Time: 3-4 hours
Habitat: Montane Forest
Highlights: With Uhuru Peak a glorious memory far behind you, you'll begin your hike back to civilization on a full stomach. It can be slippery so watch those knees! You'll have time to take in the misty cloud forest and perhaps even spot a Colobus monkey. Arriving at Mweka Gate you'll receive your summit certificates and Don't forget to tip your guide, cook and porters. It is time for celebration!

Day 7: Departure – Transfer to Kilimanjaro International Airport

After an incredible adventure on Mount Kilimanjaro, your journey comes to an end. After breakfast, you will be transferred to Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) for your onward international flight. This is a moment to reflect on your incredible achievement. If time allows, you may have a chance to pick up some souvenirs. Our team will ensure a smooth and timely transfer, bidding you farewell with warm wishes!
